Pacific Southwest Regional Center of Excellence & University of California, Irvine
August 16 - 20, 2010 Biosafety and Biocontainment Training for BSL-3 Operations and Maintenance
Training Program for High-Containment Laboratories
The PSWRCE and UC Irvine are developing comprehensive certificate-based training programs for high-containment laboratory personnel in the following areas:
- Operations & Support - Theoretical and practical training in a mock laboratory setting equipped with state-of-the-art HVAC/air handling and building automation systems, effluent decontamination, Biosecurity including biometric systems and video surveillance. Personnel from all skilled trades will have the opportunity to learn basic and advanced laboratory systems operation, preventative maintenance and trouble-shooting/diagnostics in a hands-on practical real-time setting.
- Researchers – Research personnel working in high-containment laboratories will be trained using a behavioral-based training model similar to the Emory and Colorado State programs.
- First Responders – Emergency Response personnel including Fire, Paramedics, Police, and HazMat teams will be trained specifically for responses to emergencies involving the unique characteristics of high-containment laboratories.
- Architects and Engineers – A laboratory design and retrofitting course will be developed to train High-Containment laboratory project architects, design engineers and planners on the key features for mechanical, electrical, plumbing, Biosecurity, equipment requirements for designing new- or retrofitting- existing facilities.
To provide a venue for this training, a 4000 square foot training facility will be built to accommodate a lecture hall, functional equipment training room, and mock BSL-3 and ABSL-3 laboratories.
